Melanie’s Want to Read Wednesday #5
TITLE: Prince Lestat
AUTHOR: Anne Rice
GOODREADS’ AVG. RATING: N/A; Not yet released so any current ratings don’t count!
The novel opens with the vampire world in crisis…vampires have been proliferating out of control; burnings have commenced all over the world, huge massacres similar to those carried out by Akasha in The Queen of the Damned… Old vampires, roused from slumber in the earth are doing the bidding of a Voice commanding that they indiscriminately burn vampire-mavericks in cities from Paris and Mumbai to Hong Kong, Kyoto, and San Francisco. As the novel moves from present-day New York and the West Coast to ancient Egypt, fourth century Carthage, 14th-century Rome, the Venice of the Renaissance, the worlds and beings of all the Vampire Chronicles—Louis de Pointe du Lac; the eternally young Armand, whose face is that of a Boticelli angel; Mekare and Maharet, Pandora and Flavius; David Talbot, vampire and ultimate fixer from the secret Talamasca; and Marius, the true Child of the Millennia; along with all the other new seductive, supernatural creatures—come together in this large, luxuriant, fiercely ambitious novel to ultimately rise up and seek out who—or what—the Voice is, and to discover the secret of what it desires and why…
And, at the book’s center, the seemingly absent, curiously missing hero-wanderer, the dazzling, dangerous rebel-outlaw—the great hope of the Undead, the dazzling Prince Lestat…
WHY I WANT TO READ IT:
I feel as if I need to keep myself under control for fear of ultimately fangirling myself into incoherence. I am a huge fan of Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles and it came about in the somewhat normal teenage fashion, so STORY TIME! I was looking for something to watch on television one night and came across the movie “The Queen of the Damned” getting ready to start on one of the movie channels. I saw that Aaliyah had a role in it and since I was a fan of vampires anyways, I decided to watch it. When the film started to play I noticed the caption at the beginning which stated it was based upon a book of the same name. Of course being the reader that I am, I made a mental note of the book series and decided I would look into it the next time I was at the book store. I watched the movie and I was instantly intrigued by Lestat – the brat prince, a name I didn’t yet know him by and yet Stuart Townsend captured that facet of his character perfectly. It probably didn’t help that this is what I was watching on screen…And so my love affair with Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles and ultimately Lestat began and I don’t think anyone can blame me…
I felt devastated when I had heard the news that Anne Rice wasn’t going to write about her vampires anymore, that The Vampire Chronicles was essentially over…I was just so disappointed by the news. Now, I feel just as elated at the prospect of there being new adventures for Lestat and all of the other amazing characters in this world. Based upon my interpretation of the synopsis it seems as if we are going to be learning and discovering further history of their world, for who else could cause such destructive chaos to the vampire world except one of incredible age? Perhaps that means I will have to pull out the rest of the series and re-read it before reading this one…after all, I just can’t say no to more Lestat!
If you are a fan of Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles and looking forward to reading this, the release date is October 28th! You have 6 days folks – this is not a drill!
